A dog saved three people from dying in a fire at a flat in west London.
Fire crews said a pet dog at the flat in Shepherd's Bush was responsible in part for the occupants' survival.
But they warned people to check their smoke alarms as it emerged no alert sounded because the batteries were flat.
The pooch, nicknamed Smokey by firefighters, woke up its owners when smoke began filling the ground floor property on Stanlake Road.
The two men and one women were woken up to find themselves trapped inside by flames and smoke.
But the fast actions of pet Smokey gave them time to call fire crews to the address.
They were given advice over the phone by crews which enabled them to survive long enough for help to arrive.
They were subsequently rescued by firefighters and escaped unharmed.
Five other women were rescued from two other flats above theirs, the London Fire Brigade said.
Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service treated all eight people for smoke inhalation at the scene.
